Job Description

SJS Industrial, a veteran-owned media blasting, industrial painting, powder coating, and light fabrication shop in Virginia Beach, VA, that serves military and maritime customers, is seeking a full-time professional Spray Painter to work Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. The ideal candidate for this position is an experienced Powder Coater with four (4) or more years of recent technical experience applying industrial or marine coatings to metal components, along with some experience teaching, mentoring, directing, or supervising the activity of junior powder coaters. He or she should know how to interpret technical drawings and specifications to apply the correct type and thickness of powder as measured in millimeters, how to pretreat and arrange items for coating without damaging them or resulting in uneven powder coverage, how to use an industrial respirator and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) correctly for safety, and how to provide basic instruction to junior personnel. The ideal candidate enjoys collaborating with others within a fast-paced team environment and will exhibit conscientious and careful workmanship to ensure customer technical requirements are fulfilled.

Responsibilities

  • Apply wet coatings in accordance with customer work orders, which consist of spec sheets and technical drawings called "traveler forms," plus any additional instructions from the Production Manager
  • Start up and shut down Paint booth; ensure the proper operation of both the booth and its curing cycle set for the specified amount of time
  • Before commencing each shift, inspect applicator guns, air compressors/pumps, and related tools and equipment to ensure safety and functionality. Coordinate with maintenance technicians to schedule regular preventative maintenance, thereby ensuring maximum uptime of paint booth and equipment.
  • Perform regular inspections of racks, hooks, and accessories, identifying those that need maintenance, repair, or replacement. Load or unload racks without damaging objects, when required
  • Coat objects evenly, consistently, and at the correct mil thickness; observe equipment, booth gauges, and control panels as necessary to achieve optimal coating
  • Inspect work daily for quality and to prevent defects before passing items to other departments in the production line
  • Cooperate and collaborate diplomatically with the Quality Control Inspectors and others to correct and resolve any defects
  • Fill in required project paperwork completely, correctly, and at the proper intervals daily
  • Provide junior staff members with instruction on how to safely spray paint and operate small hand tools and power tools like pneumatic sanders, electric drills, and impact wrenches to assemble, disassemble, and prepare items for spray paint
  • Regularly update senior personnel about the performance of junior personnel, the general operational status of the booths, ovens, and equipment, and any emergent issues or problems. Make suggestions to leadership about how to improve speed, quality, or efficiency of production. Recommend error-proofing mechanisms, checklists, signage, and/or other techniques to help prevent defects and reduce errors
  • Regularly monitor paint stocks, levels, and storage to eliminate waste as well as potential shortages; report emergent problems or issues to management or inventory control promptly
  • Perform routine shift closeout activities like cleanup, tool return, and general housekeeping (a responsibility shared equally by everyone on staff.
  • Other production-related tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Production Manager, the SJS Industrial Director, or the company officers.

Qualifications

  • Be able to pass an in-person spray paint performance test
  • Possess four (4) or more years of recent career experience wet spray painting in an industrial or maritime/marine environment
  • An individual certified at the C12 level who has experience with industrial wet spray painting is a major plus
  • Understand the basic physical properties and mechanics of spray painting for metals
  • Be able to understand and accurately interpret line drawings, specifications, and technical details shown on work orders to be able to correctly apply the right type/brand, color, and mil thickness of spray painting
  • Must be willing to wear Proper Protective Equipment (PPE) like a respirator correctly at all times when working as required by occupational safety laws
  • Strong English communication skills (because of safety concerns, the need to communicate about potential hazards with others, and to fill in technical paperwork, which requires verbal accuracy and specificity)
  • Ability to provide junior spray painters with simple verbal instructions, check the quality of their work in progress, and diplomatically recommend improvements to their techniques or performance
  • This is a fast-paced physical job in a production facility requiring interaction with a work team in a noisy environment, so the ability to see and hear clearly, stand, walk, bend over, crouch, and lift and carry objects that are up to 30 pounds in weight are all required. Must be physically capable of spending the majority of every work shift standing, moving, or walking
  • The shop has limited climate control, so the Spray Painter must physically be able to handle working in different temperatures and humidity levels
  • Ability to qualify for forklift certification is a plus
  • Must be able to successfully pass a drug test and background check
